Monday Art Club: Emily Kngwarreye
In the new Monday after school workshop today, we looked at Australia's most famous and successful indigenous female artist, Emily Kngwarreye. I told the kids that Emily didn't even start painting until she was 80 which is much, much older than their nans. They were very impressed.
They tried their hand at creating yam tracks as well as dot painting with cotton buds. We talked about aboriginal culture and the conversation ended up being about the strangest thing we'd ever eaten (I won that contest when I told them I'd eaten Pop's placenta!). One little lad said 'I love curry so much that it makes me hate it' which really made me laugh. I love how at 6 years old, he gets the power that curry has over us....
